Sydney Automotive Paints and Equipment (SAPE) was founded in 1976 in New South Wales, Australia, to distribute automotive refinishing products to the collision repair industry. By 1980, SAPE had become the leading distributor in metropolitan Sydney, prompting a move to a larger facility in Marrickville in 1984, which included a dedicated R&D center.
The company expanded regionally in the 1990s, opening agencies in Victoria and acquiring Prestige Paints & Equipment Supplies in Brisbane and the Gold Coast in 1996. In 2009, SAPE acquired Kenney’s Automotive Paints and Automotive Colour & Equipment, relocating its head office to Condell Park, NSW, in a purpose-built facility.
In 2018, SAPE acquired Paint Depot on the Gold Coast and, in 2019, launched a cutting-edge training facility at its Condell Park HQ for the collision repair industry. This facility was designed to create a virtual workplace experience that mirrored the challenges of a real body shop in a risk-free environment.
In 2021, SAPE acquired Peninsula Paint Supplies at West Gosford and Auto Paint Supplies in Canberra, located in the bustling retail hub of Fyshwick, ACT.
In August 2022, SAPE further strengthened its position with the acquisition of Signature Refinish Supplies, a prominent automotive paint distributor serving Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
In 2024, SAPE announced its acquisition of Ultimate Finish in Warragul, a leading distributor of premium automotive and industrial paints. In 2025, SAPE opened a new state-of-the-art facility in Southport on the Gold Coast, significantly expanding its warehouse capacity to better serve the local market.
Today, SAPE operates across Australia and New Zealand, working closely with a network of distributors and agents. The company partners with leading global manufacturers, including 3M, BASF, Axalta, and more, to bring innovative products to the Australian market.

In 2005, 2 days short of his second birthday, Elie’s son Emilio was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a severe muscle-wasting condition that affects 1 in 3,500 children, 99% of whom are boys. Once diagnosed, children are normally confined to a wheelchair between the ages of 7 and 12, and most do not live past their early twenties. DMD has no cure and no one survives.
